Question:
Can anyone please tell me if YOGA works a great deal for stress, I was
told it does and am interested in learning about it. I have stress
related problems and some anxiety problems as well. I am a fairly fit
young guy (26)...who works out regularly...but never did much cardio or
relaxation exercises. I am now taking my cardiovascular health much more
serious now and would like some info on this.
Answer:
There are many different kinds of yoga that you could choose from, but I
believe that all forms lead you to the realization of who you are, and what
you need. If you want a cardiovascular type yoga series, power yoga or
Bikram yoga may best suit you. Someone who wants to do work on postures,
meditation and relaxation may find that Kripalu yoga offers them a variety
of techniques to stretch the muscles and the souls of our body.
Yoga has helped me to be more relaxed, by teaching me how to be more in the
present moment of my experiences. Remember that when the student is ready,
the teacher will come. So search, and what you find is probably exactly
what you need.
I, too, am a "young guy (26)". I started doing astanga yoga
(frequently known in the US as "Power Yoga") a little over a year ago.
Here are some of my thoughts...
1) Stress: Yes, it will help you deal with stress in a couple of ways.
First, taking the time out for yourself each day is something that we
should all do but frequently don't. The time to yourself to concentrate
and contemplate will help you relax. Second, the breathing techniques
learned in yoga will come in useful when you are placed in a stressful
situation.
2) Cardiovascular health: Although astanga yoga is not an aerobic
exercise (in the traditional sense), it does train your lungs and heart
to work more efficiently. In the first couple of weeks, you may feel
like you're getting a great aerobic workout, but as your body adjusts
over time, that will pass.
3) Finally, you can't overlook the benefits of stretching, flexibility
and muscle toning that comes from diligent yoga practice.
