Fibromyalgia is Not A Mental Illness Health Articles ?

Question:

Fibromyalgia is Not A Mental Illness Health Articles ?

Answer:
Fibromyalgia is Not A Mental Illness Health Articles: http://www.shpm.com/articles/health/myalgia.html

Self-defeating beliefs, along with attitudes and judgments, can lead to a multitude of physical and psychological challenges, including Fibromyalgia. The Option Institute offers programs designed to help you gain new perspectives on the attitudes and judgments that may be affecting your life, especially those regarding and surrounding Fibromyalgia.

I've had a dig about on it and I can't find anything to suggest that this is anything more than either a/ A genuine 'project' setup by someone who thinks FMS is a fixed phenomenon and what worked for her will work for anyone. or b/ One of those dodgy 'institutions' that specialises in drawing in the ignorant and those who didn't need much help anyhow. Often these 'institutions' turn out to be 'providing' the kind of 'care' an insurance company would rather shell out for rather than a proper long term option. 'You've had the 'cure' so you can't have any more help.' kinda thing.

What ever. I think the fact that this was posted as a follow up to this thread says more than enough! Duh!

I wonder if Dr 'allinmyhead' Edell has any connection with this? ;-}

Also, are you asserting that FM is caused by depression? That is what your site seems to say. Did you know that there are many studies showing that FM is biochemically different from depression? Reducing stress and treating co-occurign depression for those who have it can help, but it is not a cure. And many of us do not suffer from depression or "self defeating attitudes" at all.

FM is currently thought to be caused by damage or dysfunction in the central nervous system, although the exact cause is not known. Some theories of how this may occur are: through a serious illness, autoimmune disease, genetic factors, or injury to the spine or head. Most people with FM have a central nervous system sleep disorder called alpha wave intrusion. MRIs and pet scans of the brain show abnormalities in the blood flow to the brain. Neurological examination often shows mild dysautonomia. The cerebral spinal fluid has been shown to have abnormally high substance P, abnormally high nerve growth factor, and abnormally low norepinepherine among other biochemical imbalances.

So, knowing this, most of us here are extremely wary of claims that FM is psychogenic in one fashion or another. FM is not an attitude problem. There is growing evidence that it is an organic neurological condition. Stress reduction techniques can help because the biochemical problems we have diminish our ability to deal with stress. But this is treatment of a symptom, not treatment of the cause. Because of this, stress reduction alone should not be promoted as the sole method of treatment of the condition.

People with fibromyalgia are in pain, and are often misinformed or neglected by medical doctors, psychologists, alternative practitioners, and other professionals who are not up to date on the current medical research. Outmoded attitudes claiming that FM is caused by neurosis or depression continue to get in the way of our search for appropriate medical care. So perhaps you can understand that people with FM do not take kindly to anyone spreading misinformation about our condition.

If you would like to visit a web site with good information on FM, check out the Georgetown University Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center:

If you are sincere in your desire to help people with FM, then I hope you will revise your website and your advertising to remove inaccuracies and strive to present a more factual representation of this medical condition.
