Question:
This is a subject that I find interesting. I've been slowing reading
the book, "Wherever You Go There You Are" over the last several months.
Learning to Deal With Illness, Stress. EDITOR's NOTE: Many of
techniques taught in this course at Duke University are available in a
book titled, "Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in
Everyday Life," by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Answer:
Stress management is good for anyone. Most people don't even notice when
they are stressed because it becomes so habitual. So becoming alert,
aware, or mindful is definitely the first step toward turning that
around.
I attended a lecture about 2 1/2 years ago by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, who
was visiting San Francisco as part of his lecture tour. I was quite
impressed with him and shortly afterward took an eight session seminar
on Mindfulness Meditation presented by Dr. Barbara Regan, a psychologist
who had been personally trained by Kabat-Zinn. I was going through a
very bad period at that time due to the death of my long time partner.
The Mindfulness techniques were beneficial to me and I practiced them
for nearly a year. But after a while, I got lazy and gradually stopped
doing them. I have the tapes that were part of the seminar and I really
should resume the techniques. I would recommend Dr. Kabat-Zinn's book
and Mindfulness Meditation to anyone who is stressed (which is just
about everyone in these times).
Many illness and work is stress related...controlling stress takes time
(its not easy )call mind- body techniques....bringing up old wounds that
didn't heal..Stress.....making a small problem into a big problem.. all
building up to stress...our minds play tricks..everybody reacts
different to stress..not everybody is the same...what is stress to you
may not be stress for somebody else...don't let stress take over your
life..yes it is true breathing and meditation and yoga are very
important.its a great tool..i must add to this..in order to get to the
root of your stress ..find out where its coming from(many factors
here)...understanding "WHY IS THERE SO MUCH STRESS IN MY LIFE"....a
trick i teach(maybe some know this trick)for built up stress...take a
soft rubber bat...or pillow...beat up on it ..HIT HIT HIT..take the
stress out on your piece of furniture..not on someones life or
yourself...by doing this it takes off stress off your mind...again the
root of stress is to find out why..so it doesn't take hold of your
life..sorry long reply..i teach stress management....hugz to all
