Question:
can anyone give me the formula for figuring out how fast my heart rate should
be during exercise? during 40 mins of aerobics, mine usually gets up to around
150, and i'm 37. i have no idea if this is too fast or too slow?
Answer:
220 minus your age is your maximum heart rate. My understanding is that you
should exercise in the 65% to 85% of the maximum range.
In your case,
220 - 37 = 183 maximum heart rate
183 X .65 = 119 65% rate
183 X .85 = 156 85% rate
Sounds like you have been working at the high end of your range of 119 - 156.
I'm sure there are others here that know this better than I do, but I think
that you burn more fat at the lower end of your range than the higher. Someone
please correct me if I'm wrong.
You want to workout at the high range of about 156. Higher will improve your
cardio conditioning but you won't burn all that much. Lower then 140
probably won't do anything for you at all. A workout at 156 is many times
better then one at 140. Intensity is more important then time. 20 minutes at
156 is better then 1 hour at 140.
sounds like at least i'm in
the "window" where i should be.
