I was wondering what the contact stresses in Ideas really mean. For the
same element the contact stress and element stress are often two
completely different values. How can that be?

What stress in the element are you looking at ? The equivalent stress ?
That should be different from the contact stress. The stress in the
element in the direction normal to the surface should be approximately
the contact stress...
