Question:
Benefits of exercise ?
Answer:
Exercise has the following benefits:
reduced insulin resistance
reduced LDL
increased HDL
reduced triglycerides
increased endorphins (especially walking)
improved blood pressure
improved lung function
reduced chance of cardiovascular disease
reduced chance of retinopathy
improved control of osteoarthritis
reduction in osteoporosis
Back about 1 year ago, when I had my lipids done, my
numbers were good except my HDL could have been higher. I asked my doc
what could raise the HDL and she told me exercise. So, I guess I
experiment every 3 months (between blood tests) to see if something
works or not. So for those next 3 months, I walked 30 minutes everyday.
Walla! My next HDL was higher and all of rest of the numbers were lower
(chol, LDL, trigs etc...)
So it is confirmed that exercise does help tremendously!!!!! Then it was
the timing of the exercise - if I eat something higher carb, then walk
it off - kill 2 birds with one stone, so I either ate cereal for
breakfast, then walked 30 minutes to burn it off, or ate higher carbs
for dinner and walked it off after dinner.
There is also the mantra of "walk at least 10,000 steps everyday", which
I try to do.
One thing I do notice is I have the endurance to walk 30-45 minutes
before my bs goes low (2.9 - 3.4), so I have to be careful and carry
candy with me. That's why it's also important to test before during and
after exercise.
Metformin inhibits some of the liver dump, so it can, just not as often as
some of the other drugs do. And you'll notice it didn't cause hypos by
itself in this case, only in combination with exercise.
