When to exercise ?

Question:

I am considering starting a new job, but I am concerned at how it is likely to disrupt my exercise schedule. At present, every third day, two hours after breakfast (so around 10:30 am) I go to the gym for a couple of hours.

If I get this job (it is a driving job), I may have to start early, say 6am and be working for some 11 hours. At present, I haven't figured out how to eat and work, let alone exercise... but, assuming I can interrupt work to eat (and if I can't I won't work for them), when should I be exercising? Early in the morning, before breakfast? In the evening when I am likely to be tired?

As far as I can tell, I have some flexibility over my start time, but at present I get breakfast at McDonald's, which opens at 7am (cooking facilities where I live are next-to-non-existant so I almost always eat out). Anyone solved a similar problem?

Answer:
what kind of job prevents eating a meal during an 11 hour stint? that's not legal in the U.S. but I see you are in the UK. Bummer. I'd NEVER, EVER consider a job like that, even if I wasn't a diabetic. Good luck!

What possible solution could someone come up with for you if you claim you can't eat at work? You've described a conundrum, for sure!

If you work .. you might find you no longer need as much excercise. Saying that you'll probably find that after a full day out driving the last thing you want to do is go to the gym. You could do a couple of hours on a saturday or a sunday or both, but if you're working full time you might resent losing your two free days.

Eating and working is simple, i eat when i'm hungry and test if i'm not sure. As a rule, i stop for lunch at 12 no matter what and eat whatever i want to eat and inject based on what i'm eating and what my predinner reading is. Today i was at 4.4 before lunch, same size meal as normal but i took 10u of novorapid not 12 to allow for the lower bg than usual.

You don't say what kind of driving work it is, if it's under tachograph then you will be forced to take regular breaks... if you don't fancy sleeping then you can always go for a walk around where you park up. Or if you need to excercise that much just to keep your bg's inline you might want to reevaluate what you're eating?

Breakfast for me is always two weetabix with semi skimmed milk. That does me fine until mid mornign when i'll have a slice of toast or something. If i'm out driving i carry a cereal bar, making sure my blood sugar doesn't drop below a safe level is the goal. If you're going to be driving then you need to test your blood sugar and see how driving affects it. You can then work out w hat you need to eat or not eat based on that results of those tests.

According to UK law, you get a 30 minute break after 6 hours of work. I am not sure of driving hours, but it is less than 11 hours a day, and I don't suppose you will actually be at the wheel that long.

Are you sure you want to work an 11-hour day? If you do, you will probably not need much extra exercise on the work-days.
